5 Movies That Inspire Wanderlust
What is wanderlust? Wanderlust is a desire to travel. Jeff and I love watching movies that relate to anything we are doing. When we traveled to the Harry Potter theme park in Florida, we watched every Harry Potter movie before hand. For our travels we have compiled a list of our top 5 favorite movies that inspire wanderlust.

Midnight in Paris is a collaboration of reality versus fantasy. We follow Gill through his present situation of being in a relationship that is not allowing him to reach his full potential in life. Inspiration is hard to discover for Gill until he wanders back into the 1920’s; his favorite time period. This journey he embarks on leads him to meet some of the most talented artists and writers of the 20’s. These include Picasso, Dali, Bunuel, Hemingway, the Fitzgeralds and many others. Through his journeys back and forth from present to past he finds the inspiration he needs to fulfill his dreams and potential in life. It is a great twist to see how he discovers what is missing in his life in the present by discovering the past. If you have a love of literature or a love for traveling then we recommend this movie to you. Not only does this romantic comedy capture the essence of Paris but it captures the art, history, and culture and brings all of that to life on screen and captures you in the story. Check it out and let us know how you enjoyed it.
Favorite Midnight in Paris quote :
We all fear death and question our place in the universe. The artist’s job is not to succumb to despair, but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existence. – Gertrude Stein
As Jeff would say, the ultimate adventure movies, the Lord of the Ring trilogy is a must for this list. Although you cant travel to Middle Earth, you can travel to New Zealand, where the majority of the movies were filmed. Epic landscapes are an understatement for the mountains of New Zealand and the way they shot the movies makes an adventure to this island a must. You can still visit the hobbit holes that were used in the films AND stay in hobbit holes at the Hobbit Motel. Jeff and I have always wanted to visit New Zealand and this just adds one more experience to add to our New Zealand Bucket List.
Favorite Lord of the Ring (trilogy, movies and books) quote:
Not all who wander are lost.
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
It’s a dangerous business, going out of your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no telling where you might be swept off to.
I think I’m quite ready for another adventure.
Home is behind, the world ahead.
The world is not in your books and maps, its out there.
Little by little, one travels far.
This definitely deserves a spot on our top 5 list. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starts as we follow Walter through his boring, uneventful life. Throughout the movie he escapes his boring life via fantasies he conjures in his mind. In his fantasies he has courage and bravery to goes outside of his comfort zone. Throughout the movie Walter has to find a negative of a photograph by a famous photographer for the magazine he works for. He decided to bring his fantasies to life and goes out to travel the world in order to find the negative he is looking for. This movie explores some great areas and really makes you want to make life more exciting by doing something you normally wouldn’t do. But in the end it is well worth it.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty movie quote:
To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.
Probably one of my favorite movies, this romantic love story is set in the United Kingdom. What really makes this movie worthy of our top 5 list is the deeper meaning of the story. You have a young man, Will, who was the adventurous type. He was never afraid to do anything or try anything new, until one day when he was involved in a motorcycle accident that put him permanently in a wheel chair. Then you have Lou, who is quite content with her simple life. Staying at home, working to support her family, and maybe going to the pub every now and again. She doesn’t feel the need to live her life and is just content with it. Once she meets Will he teaches her that there is more to life and that she must not take it for granted and you should live life to the fullest. Because you never know how much time you have left in the world.
Favorite Me Before You Quotes:
“Live boldly. Push yourself. Don’t settle.”
“You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.”
“Just live well. Just live.”
Sure, the end might not make you want to wander, but this movie (based off of a real person’s experiences) isn’t about the destination. Its about the journey. Chris McCandless, the protangoist of the story, abandons his possessions in the persuit of finding a purpose in life. Along the way, he meets many interesting people all of whom shape his perspective on what it means to live. He travels the western United States and part of Mexico (and probably Canada) as he explores the world and himself. A bit of a loner at the beginning of the story, he becomes quite fond of these people and the movie focuses on the transformation of his psyche. I think this is an important topic because any travel you take, changes you, sometimes in a minor way, sometimes in a major one.
